With the amount of car owners on the road today it's no secret that there are a lot of car maintenance myths floating around. So test your knowledge of car care -- especially Mustangs-- with our car maintenance quiz.
Q:How long should brakes last?
A:It depends on the make and model of your car, but brakes can last anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 miles. This also depends on your driving habits, as those who stop-and-go drive more frequently will have to change their brakes more than those who drive mostly on the highway without traffic.
Q: Increasing horsepower on your car is impossible, especially on a Mustang.
Reality: Untrue! Here are a couple of ways increasing horsepower on your car will not only improve Mustang performance, but increase the torque as well.
Increasing cold air intake: cold air is dense, and the denser the air the more powerful it is for your engine. This is especially important if you are into Mustang racing, as it can bring you around +15HP and an increase of 1 to 2 miles per gallon. These cold air kits are also easy to install and will only take about a half an hour or less.
Larger diameter throttle body: this will regulate the airflow into your engine and help your engine fire properly.
Performance chips and programmers: one of the most important tips for a more powerful engine is to use a performance chip to adjust your vehicle's settings. They will monitor your air-to-fuel ratio, turbo boost, and ignition timing advance. Considering that Mustang engine power ranges from 101 horsepower to 390 horsepower, you won't want to miss out!
Q: Will changing the oil and filter more often boost performance?
Reality: Yes, as changing these features will help the engine last longer. Changing the oil regularly, around once every 3,000 miles, will help your engine run smoother and will decrease the chances you will have to service your vehicle.
Q: Putting premium gas in my car is the best way to get a premium performance.
Reality: False! Unless your engine is made to take advantage of the extra octane in premium fuel, then there is no point in paying extra. Check your owner's manual to determine what fuel is the best for your car.
